How to make your home a place your nervous system can rest

A reflection on simplicity, rituals and creating a home that feels safe to land in

There is something deeply healing about walking into a home that allows your whole body to exhale. Not a perfect home. Not a curated or expensive one.But a home that feels safe to land in.

I think many of us underestimate how much our surroundings affect the way we feel internally. How the energy of a space quietly shapes our nervous systems, our emotions, our ability to soften and truly rest.

And over time, I’ve realized that creating a home that supports us emotionally has very little to do with trends or perfection (although that can be fun). It has much more to do with authenticity.

With creating a space that genuinely reflects who we are and what we value.

Because no home that feels nourishing is ever identical to another. What brings one person peace may not bring peace to someone else. And I think that is important to remember in a world where we are constantly shown images of how our homes are “supposed” to look.

To me personally, I’ve noticed that I naturally lean toward things that feel real and grounding. Natural materials like wood, linen and wool. Soft textures inspired by nature and a neutral color palette. Also second hand pieces and objects made by hand is something I´v been drawn to more lately. I love the feeling of an object having history and feeling to it, a uniqueness that is hard to find in mass produced brands.

Our living room wooden table we made ourselves and I absolutely love it, the candle holder on the wall is thrifted, so is the

candle holder on the table, some fresh flowers always brings a good mood, linen pillows and our scented candle that smell lovely throughout the house.

There is something about these elements that immediately make me feel calmer and more connected, as though the home itself breathes a little softer.

Fresh flowers have become another quiet ritual for me. Even something as simple as placing branches from outside in a vase can completely shift the feeling of a room. It reminds me that beauty doesn’t need to be complicated to be meaningful.

And of course, scented candles (you find our hand made candles in our online shop here) have become part of the rhythm of our home in a very natural way. Not simply as decoration, but as atmosphere. A gentle scent moving through the rooms, soft light in the evening, the feeling of warmth and presence settling into ordinary moments.

But I also believe a home cannot feel truly peaceful through objects alone, no matter how beautiful they are.

A home becomes nourishing through the life lived inside it.

Through rituals, through presence, through the energy we bring into it each day. For me, it’s often the smallest moments that make our home feel like a sanctuary.

Making a cup of tea in the morning and sitting quietly for a few minutes before the day begins. Lighting a candle while reading a book in the evening. Sharing dinner together around the table. The familiar sounds of everyday life unfolding around me. Spending time with loved ones within the walls of our home, share bread and talk about life.

These moments may seem simple from the outside, but I think they are what truly create warmth inside a home. Not perfection, but lived moments filled with presence.

And perhaps this is also why I’ve come to feel that our homes become more aligned the more we become ourselves.

The more honestly we live - the more clearly we know our values. The more intentional we become with our energy, our habits, and what we allow into our lives is what ultimately shapes the identity of our homes.

Because a peaceful home is not only created through design choices — it is created through the inner atmosphere we cultivate within ourselves.

Through gratitude. Through softness. Through slowing down enough to actually inhabit our own lives. And also to focus on simplicity, on what is essential and of true value and gently let go of what is not. In that way, we make room for what really matters like connection, supportive relationships, clarity and abundance.

I don’t believe creating a home your nervous system can rest in is about achieving some final image or aesthetic. I think it is something gentler than that - a quiet ongoing process of asking yourself:

What makes me feel safe here?

What helps me soften?

What feels true to me?

And then allowing your home to slowly become an extension of those answers. 🤍
